Kiran Gulzar a model and actor from Chennai. Born and raised in this city has played a big role in shaping who she is
Her journey began with modeling and gradually found her way into acting, both allowing her to express different sides of herself
She is someone who’s curious, always learning, and open to new experiences. Beyond work, she is deeply passionate about self-growth and fitness.
I first developed an interest in modelling when Manushi Chhillar won Miss World. I was still in college at the time, and watching her succeed made me think, deep down, that I could also be a beauty queen. However, my family wasn’t very supportive of the idea at the time. It wasn’t until after COVID-19, in 2021, that I finally found the courage to pursue it. I entered pageants, and that’s how it all started.
For me, the most defining moment has been when people started recognising me for my skills, and I began receiving opportunities because of that. Knowing that I’ve inspired some people also means a lot to me. Sometimes, even a simple compliment feels more meaningful than any trophy.
I enjoy being in front of the camera, so I enjoy all kinds of shoots. But I especially appreciate the well-planned ones, where my time is valued, I’m paid fairly for my effort, and respected for my skills. Working with a professional and supportive team in that kind of environment makes the experience even more enjoyable.
I don’t think the industry has changed a lot since I started modelling. But one thing I’ve noticed is that there are many more projects now. I started during COVID, so there weren’t many opportunities back then. Now, things are much busier. I also feel the industry was always somewhat inclusive, and it’s becoming even more inclusive over time, which I appreciate.
Many people think modelling is easy or just about looking good on camera. But it’s a lot of hard work, long hours, handling rejection, staying fit, and always being ready to perform. Some people also think models don’t need to be smart or skilled, but that’s not true. Modelling takes confidence, discipline, and the ability to show emotions and tell a story through poses and expressions. Modelling is also a lifestyle choice, it’s not just a job, but something that affects how you live and take care of yourself every day.
As a woman in the industry, I’ve faced challenges like the casting couch, sadly, it’s so common now that many just accept it as normal, which it shouldn’t be. I’ve always tried to speak up about it. Body shaming has also been a challenge, though I do think things are improving and the industry is becoming more inclusive. There’s still work to be done, but I’m hopeful we’re moving in the right direction.
In this field, maintaining confidence and self-worth comes down to consciously focusing on yourself. It’s easy to fall into the trap of comparison, but I remind myself that everyone’s timeline is different. Just because I may achieve something now doesn’t mean my friend or someone else won’t achieve it later — and vice versa. Success isn’t a race. I focus on my growth and celebrate small wins along the way. For me, real confidence comes from knowing that I’m moving forward on my path, at my pace.
Yes, I’ve had to stand my ground many times in this industry, especially when it comes to my payment, my time, and setting personal boundaries. I’ve learned how important it is to be clear about what I deserve because if I don’t, people might try to take advantage. So I always make sure to stand up for myself at every step, whether it’s a big issue or something small.
Dealing with criticism or rejection can be challenging, especially when you’re just starting. It’s easy to fall into the trap of comparing yourself to others and feeling like you’re not good enough. Instead of seeing criticism or rejection as a reflection of your worth, view it as an opportunity to grow. It takes time to build confidence and skill, so I focus on consistently improving myself and learning from every piece of feedback I receive. As long as I keep progressing and stay open to growth, criticism becomes a tool that helps me, rather than something that holds me back.
On camera, I can pull off just about any style, that’s the fun part of being a model. But off-camera is a different story. I’m all about cosy, comfortable clothes. You could say my alter ego handles the fashion, while I handle the comfort! And honestly, my curly hair is my built-in accessory, it does half the styling for me.
One fashion trend that I like is sustainable fashion, things made from recycled materials, organic fabrics, and homegrown designs. I’ve also been trying to fill my wardrobe with homegrown brands because their pieces are so unique. One trend I wish would go away is low-rise jeans because I find them uncomfortable and not practical for everyday wear.
I follow a minimal skincare routine because it’s easier to stay consistent that way. I have dry skin, so I use Neutrogena’s gentle foaming face wash, CeraVe moisturiser for dry skin, and sunscreen from Fae Beauty. If I’m wearing makeup, I use Embryolisse moisturiser as a base before applying it.
I have everything from A to Z when it comes to makeup products. But if I’m just going out normally, I usually keep it simple with concealer, lipstick, and mascara.
I honestly feel like I have a lot to improve on this front. Sometimes, other priorities get in the way, and I need to step back and realize that my physical health is as important.
I’m grateful to have worked with many incredible photographers and designers, so I don’t want to pick just one. Each experience has been special in its way.
Not much really, I just stick to my usual routine of moisturiser and sunscreen. If my skin feels dry, I use a face mask and under-eye patches for extra hydration.
Outside of modelling, I share different sides of my life — being a daughter, a cat mom and a model. I think it’s important to show that it’s okay to juggle multiple roles and that there’s beauty in the everyday moments too. If that can inspire or comfort someone, I’m happy.
I have many inspirations. Internationally, I admire Yasmine Wijnaldum. In India, I look up to Alicia Kaur. And my mentor, Alicia Raut, has been a big influence on me, I truly look up to her.
I think everyone knows consistency is key and that you should never stop trying. But no matter how far you go, being kind and staying grounded makes a big difference.
